Future Leaders

Launching the Durham Scouts Future Leaders Scheme (Under-18 Cohort)

We are excited to announce the launch of the Durham Scouts Future Leaders Scheme, kicking off this Autumn.   The scheme has two cohorts, under 18’s, and 18-24’s and we will be launching with the Under 18 Cohort.

It is designed to be challenging but highly desirable, serving as a springboard for young people who show a keen interest or natural aptitude for leadership – specifically the next generation of Leaders.

Our goal is simple: we want to equip, inspire, and retain these young people so they are ready to step directly into confident, impactful adult leadership roles.

Through a major partnership with the Cadet Vocational College (CVC), the academic and training side of this scheme is fully funded by Durham Scouts.

The Under-18 Pathway (Future Leaders 1) at a Glance

This scheme does not replace the Young Leader (YL) Scheme or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; rather, it weaves them together into a focussed leadership track, underpinned by a BtEC qualification.

  • Who is eligible? * Active Youth Members (Explorers / Young Leaders).
  • Post-GCSE age profile.
  • Must hold either their Young Leader Belt OR DofE Bronze Award.
  • Demonstrates a genuine interest in becoming a future Scout leader.
  • What are the core commitments?
  • Accredited Qualification: Complete a fully funded BTEC Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community (delivered by CVC, including a dedicated training residential).
  • Practical Leadership: Plan and lead an adventurous activity under the supervision of a relevant permit holder.
  • Section Management: Plan and run a full day’s programme as part of a nights away experience.
  • Scout Learning: Complete or validate Young Leader Modules A & K (If not already done).
  • Reflection: Take part in a final presentation to share their experiences and growth with the County.

Why our Young People Should Apply

When speaking to your Explorers and Young Leaders, here is why this is an unmissable opportunity for them:

  • A Standout CV & Personal Statement: A BTEC Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community is highly valued by universities, apprenticeship providers, and employers. Getting it fully funded through Scouting is a massive financial and educational bonus.
  • Exclusive Residentials & Experiences: They will get to take part in high-quality leadership residentials, working alongside peers from across the county.
  • Real Responsibility: They won’t just be “helping out”—they will be given the tools and authority to design and run significant events and adventurous activities.

How This Benefits Units and Districts

We know you are incredibly busy, and we have designed this scheme to actively support your local leadership workload:

  • Supercharged Young Leaders: The young people who complete this scheme will bring leadership, safety management, and programme planning skills back into your Explorer Units and the sections they volunteer with.
  • Seamless Transition at 18: We lose too many brilliant young people when they turn 18. This scheme builds a psychological and practical bridge straight into adult team-based volunteering, securing the next generation of section leaders for your Groups.
  • Complementary to Top Awards: The practical activities required for this scheme can easily be dual-mapped to count towards their King’s Scout Award (KSA), DofE Silver/Gold, or Explorer Belt.
