Jayne’s 25-Year Journey with the Scouts
Volunteering with the Scouts is more than just a commitment; it’s a journey filled with adventure, personal growth, and community impact. For Jayne, this journey has spanned an incredible 25 years, culminating in her recent Long Service Award. Her story is a testament to the power of Scouting in shaping both young people and leaders alike.
From Brownies to Venture Scouts
Jayne’s Scouting journey began in her youth, though not initially within the Scouts. “I was in Brownies, Guides, and Rangers,” she shares. “But I jumped ship once I found that girls could join Venture Scouts!” This bold move set her on a path that would lead to a lifelong passion for Scouting.
A Leader in Action
Currently, Jayne serves as the District Lead Volunteer (DLV) for Durham City and District while also leading an Explorer Scout Unit. Her week is filled with activities that ensure the smooth running of the groups.
“A typical week involves Explorers on a Wednesday, liaising with other leaders to prepare for meetings, and visiting other groups to say hello or hand out awards. These visits are a great opportunity to thank volunteers and connect with young people to hear about their experiences.”
Beyond weekly meetings, Jayne dedicates time to paperwork, handling permits, safeguarding matters, and leader training. She also plays a key role in district events and training sessions, supporting both young people and adult volunteers in programs like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Young Leaders.
The Impact of Scouting
When asked about the benefits of Scouting, Jayne’s enthusiasm is clear. “It stops me watching too much TV!” she jokes. But beyond that, she finds immense joy in watching young people grow. “Seeing them walk in the door uncertain about what Scouting can offer, and then watching the hard work they put into achieving a King’s Scout Award is incredibly rewarding.”
Jayne also values the development of fellow leaders. “Watching their skills and confidence shine as they lead their young people is just as fulfilling.”
Scouting has taken Jayne to places all over the world, introducing her to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. “Despite our differences, we all share that common Scouting bond,” she says.
A Call to Future Volunteers
To those considering volunteering with the Scouts, Jayne has one clear message: “Why are you waiting?! Join us, and you’ll not regret it. Scouting offers adventure, personal development, and plenty of laughter along the way.”
With 25 years of service behind her, Jayne’s passion for Scouting remains as strong as ever. Her dedication is a shining example of the incredible impact volunteers have on young people and their communities. Thank you, Jayne, for your unwavering commitment to Scouting!
