Durham Scouts are proud to celebrate a fantastic achievement from last year, as Liz Twist MP presented two Red Kite Awards in recognition of outstanding service and dedication within Scouting.

The prestigious awards were presented to:

  • The volunteers of 1st Consett Scout Group
  • Brian “Skip” Stubbs, Lead Volunteer at 1st Chopwell Scout Group

Both awards highlight the incredible impact that committed volunteers have on young people and communities across County Durham.

Celebrating the Volunteers of 1st Consett Scout Group

The volunteers of 1st Consett Scout Group were recognised for their exceptional dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to supporting young people in their community.

Week after week, the team gives their time freely to provide a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where children and young people can learn new skills, build confidence, and develop lifelong friendships. Known for thinking outside the box, they consistently go the extra mile to ensure activities are fun, engaging, and exciting across all sections — from Squirrels and Beavers through to Cubs and Scouts.

Beyond weekly meetings, the volunteers organise adventurous activities, residential experiences, and community engagement, while also acting as mentors and role models. They instil values of teamwork, resilience, and kindness, always offering encouragement, support, and a listening ear — whatever the weather.

Their dedication extends far beyond the Scout hut on Constance Street. By planning events, fundraising, maintaining facilities, and ensuring every young person feels welcomed and supported regardless of background or ability, they continue to strengthen their wider community and inspire future leaders.

Honouring Brian “Skip” Stubbs

The second Red Kite Award was presented to Brian “Skip” Stubbs, recognising more than five decades of extraordinary service to Scouting.

Skip has been a member of 1st Chopwell Scout Group since 1969 and has led the group since 1976 with passion, commitment, and a firm belief in the power of Scouting to change lives. Over the years, he has supported, inspired, and encouraged countless young people and volunteers, leaving a lasting legacy within the group and beyond.

This award is a well-deserved recognition of Skip’s exceptional contribution — not only to the young people of Chopwell, but to the wider Scouting movement across the county.

A Proud Moment for Durham Scouts

These two Red Kite Awards are a powerful reminder of the incredible volunteers who make Scouting possible. Their time, energy, and commitment continue to shape young lives and strengthen communities across Durham.

Congratulations to everyone involved — and thank you for everything you do for Scouting.
