Who can enter The Geoffrey Gordon Cup?
Teams of between 4 and 7 Explorer Scouts from anywhere in the North East can take part. Teams from outside of Durham Scout County compete together to win The Geoffrey Gordon Invitation Trophy which was donated to us by Durham Cathedral. We do allow some Girlguiding members to enter by invitation.
Where is it?
It’s based at the Ravenhill Campsite in Commondale and uses the surrounding countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors.
What can we expect?
Firstly, a great weekend of fun and adventure in County Durham. Here’s what you can expect:
- Friday Night – We ask all our teams to arrive on the Friday night at the start point for a briefing.
- Saturday – Teams start their challenge on the Saturday with a route of around 18km completing all the challenges which face them – in the past we’ve done everything from a 7m spider mountain, high rope challenges to a 16 foot giant see-saw in the trees! There are points available for every activity that you take part in.
- Saturday Night – The competition stops for a few hours and we relax with a film, food and campfire!
- Sunday – Our event on Sunday takes a different twist and features lots of different activities in the local area. You’ll need to be fast and plan well to pick up all the points!
How is it scored?
We’ll send you a copy of our rules and points scheme in your entry pack but the number one rule is that if you throw yourself into every challenge, you’ll get the most points. Most points are available for taking part in our challenges on Saturday and Sunday, not only completing them but also your leadership, team work and enthusiasm!
What time does it start?
You should arrive between 7pm and 8pm on the Friday night. The main briefing starts at 9pm.
How hard is it?
It’s up to you. On Saturday, you’ll be completing a roughly 18km walk across farm land, woodland and open terrain while carrying your kit for the weekend and you need to finish within 8 hours. On Sunday, the route is chosen by you and so you can do as much or as little as you like.
What experience or training do we need?
To get the best experience out of The Geoffrey Gordon Cup all teams should make sure they can:
- Handle the basics of First Aid for common outdoor bumps and issues
- Pitch their tent confidently in the dark
- Use a map and compass and know how to write and follow a route card
- Use a stove safely and cook simple meals outdoors
- Undertake a practice hike to build confidence
- Complete a full kit check so nothing important gets left behind
Do we need to carry our own kit?
On Saturday, you’ll need to carry all your kit for the weekend including clothes, tents and food. On Sunday, you only need to carry the real essentials.
We’ll send you a copy of the kit list nearer the time, so you can get ready.
What about food?
You’ll need to bring food for the weekend, from Friday night until Sunday lunchtime – remembering you need to carry it, cook on a camp stove and can’t refrigerate it, so choose carefully! We’ll provide a snack on Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime.
Do leaders need to attend?
Yes, a leader from each unit needs to attend the event. The Nights Away Permit is covered by the event team.
How much does it cost?
It’s £40 per person
