As a Trustee, you’ll:
- Provide strategic direction and support to the County
- Ensure good governance, financial oversight and compliance
- Help us grow, reach more young people, and deliver our vision
- Bring your skills, insight and fresh thinking to the table
You don’t need Scouts experience – just a passion to make a difference.
Role Description
- Act as Chair of the Trustee Board and Charity Trustee, ensuring the County Scout Council is well governed and complies with charity law and The Scouts’ Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR)
- Provide strategic leadership to the County, enabling effective delivery of Scouting for young people
- Lead and manage the Trustee Board, ensuring meetings are effective, inclusive, and focused on the County’s strategic priorities
- Support the County Lead Volunteer and line-manage key volunteers, working in partnership to achieve shared goals
- Liaise with Lead Volunteers.
- Lead recruitment for new Trustees.
- Support other Trustees by organising inductions, making reasonable adjustments (where needed), checking in to see how they’re getting on, and carrying out annual reviews.
- Act as an ambassador for Scouting and promoting its values
- Act as point of appeal in staffing matters
Essential Skills and Experience
- Previous experience as a Chair, Vice‑Chair, or senior leader of a board, committee, or similar governance body
- Strong understanding of governance, strategic planning, and collective decision‑making
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to build consensus and manage challenge constructively
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, integrity, and independence as a charity trustee
- Commitment to the values, safeguarding principles, and inclusive ethos of The Scouts
